Ask the desk a mortgage question

Tell us what you are trying to figure out. We answer one question a day, and we never publish your name or details.

Please leave out account numbers, Social Security numbers and other private details.

We use your details only to reply. See our privacy policy. Privacy policy

How to ask a question we can answer

  1. Say where you are in the process: just looking, pre-approved, under contract or already own.
  2. Give rough numbers if they matter (price range, down payment, credit score range).
  3. Name your state if the answer may depend on it.
  4. Leave out anything private: account numbers, SSNs, full addresses.

What happens next

  • We read every question that comes in.
  • If it is useful to many readers, it may become a future daily answer, rewritten without your details.
  • We cannot reply privately with personal advice, but we will point you to an answer if we already have one.

About asking

Will my question be published?

It may be, rewritten in plain words and without your name, location details or numbers that could identify you. We publish only questions that help many readers.

Will you reply to me personally?

We read every question but cannot give personal advice. If we already have an answer, we may send you the link.

What kinds of questions do you answer?

Anything about buying a home or refinancing in the US: budgets, down payments, loan programs, credit, mortgage insurance, closing costs, rates and refinancing.

What should I leave out?

Do not send Social Security numbers, account numbers, full addresses or copies of documents. A rough price range and credit score range are enough.

How long until my question is answered?

There is no fixed time. We answer one question a day and choose the ones that help the most readers first.

Can I ask in Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese or Korean?

Yes. Write in the language you are most comfortable with and we will answer on that language's section of the site when we can.
