Information we collect

Information you give us

• Contact and Ask the desk forms: your name (optional on Ask the desk), email address, the topic you choose, your message or question, and, if you add it, your state.
• Newsletter: your email address and the language section you signed up from.
• Emails you send us: whatever you choose to include.

Please do not send Social Security numbers, account numbers, loan documents or other sensitive information. We do not need them and will delete them if received.

Information collected automatically

• Essential browser storage: your theme (light or dark), your cookie choice and recent site searches are stored in your own browser’s local storage. They are not sent to us.
• Server logs: our hosting provider, Cloudflare, processes technical data such as IP address, browser type and the page requested in order to deliver the site and protect it from abuse. These logs are kept for a short period under Cloudflare’s own policies.
• Optional analytics: only if you accept analytics cookies, we may use a privacy-focused analytics service to count page views. It does not build advertising profiles or track you across other sites.

How we use information

• To reply to messages and correction reports.
• To consider reader questions for future answers, rewritten without names or identifying details.
• To send the newsletter you asked for.
• To keep the site secure and working.
• To understand, in aggregate, which answers are useful (only with your consent).

How information is shared

We share personal information only with service providers that help us run the site, under contracts that limit their use of it:

• Cloudflare (hosting, security, form processing).
• Our email and newsletter provider (to deliver replies and newsletters).

We may also disclose information if required by law. We never sell personal information, and we do not “share” it for cross-context behavioral advertising as defined in California law.

How long we keep it

• Contact and question messages: up to 24 months, then deleted, unless needed to handle a correction or legal matter.
• Newsletter email addresses: until you unsubscribe, then removed within 30 days.
• Browser storage: stays in your browser until you clear it.

Your privacy rights

Depending on where you live, US state privacy laws (including those in California, Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Texas, Oregon and other states) may give you the right to:

• correct inaccurate information,
• delete your information,

This site is meant for adults. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has sent us information, contact us and we will delete it.

Security

The site is served only over HTTPS, forms include spam protection, and we limit who can access messages. No method of transmission is perfectly secure, so please do not send sensitive financial details.

Changes to this policy

We will update this page when our practices change and change the “last updated” date above. Significant changes will also be noted on the home page for 30 days.

Bot protection on our forms

When you start filling in a form, the page loads Cloudflare Turnstile, Cloudflare’s check that a real person is using the form. It runs in your browser, does not show puzzles in most cases, and is used only to stop spam. Cloudflare processes technical signals (such as your IP address and browser details) for this check under its own privacy policy.
